research.pngCANDDID supports the development of research skills, system learning, and workforce capability across hospital and community intellectual disability services.

We work with clinicians, people with lived experience, and partners to identify evidence gaps, develop research questions, and build confidence to lead and participate in research.

We focus on:

  • Developing research-active clinicians across disciplines
  • Supporting co-produced research with people with intellectual disability and families
  • Identifying priorities at the hospital-to-community interface
  • Embedding evaluation and system learning into everyday practice
  • Creating pathways into NIHR and academic opportunities

How we do this:

  • Practice-informed research projects and evaluations
  • Mentorship and peer support for clinicians new to research
  • Collaborative learning events and workshops
  • Co-produced priority setting
  • Partnerships with universities and NHS research teams

Examples of activity:

  • Mixed-methods service evaluations
  • Co-developed monitoring and assessment tools
  • Qualitative studies with staff, families and people with intellectual disability
  • Implementation and workforce development projects

Looking ahead

CANDDID is strengthening its role as a platform for research capacity building to support the national shift from hospital-based to community-based care for people with intellectual disability.
