Summary:

Currently, there are no existing tools to capture resources needed to support people with intellectual disability in an inpatient setting on an individual patient basis. The project aimed to develop a tool called Universal Needs Based Resource Assessment (UNBRA) that holistically assesses the resource requirements of an individual with intellectual disability supported in an inpatient setting.

What has been done:

Using the Delphi method, focus groups were used to develop the tool which has been piloted in two inpatient units for adults with learning disabilities. Since then the tool has been shared with other inpatient services nationally and an UNBRA Network has been set up.

Next steps:

  • Further developments of the tool include work on establishing a formula for a bed-equivalent UNBRA score.
  • Work is also undertaken to establish the appropriateness of the tool for CAMHS inpatient services.
